Clean Label: Understanding the Basics

Clean Label: Understanding the Basics

How do you feel when you look at the ingredients in a packaged chocolate cupcake and see that propylene glycol is listed as an ingredient? How about when you see butylated hydroxyanisole on a box of cereal? Did you know that it’s the same ingredient that’s used in jet fuel?

If you are like most educated consumers and food manufacturers, you are part of the crowd that is seeking alternatives to chemically laden food products like the ones mentioned above. Congratulations – you are a part of the clean label food movement! Your demands for quality and transparency in food are forcing all food producers to get creative with what they offer to the public.

What is Clean Label?

In the formal sense, clean label means that there is a clear and understandable declaration of the ingredients in your food. Ingredient statements are easier to read because they contain recognizable ingredients – like those found in a home cook’s kitchen – with names that are easy to pronounce. Demanding clean label products reduces the likelihood that food manufacturers will take advantage of ambiguities in labeling on products that contain questionably “clean” ingredients.

While there is no single universally accepted definition of clean label at this time, the overall goal of clean manufacturers is to convey transparency, quality and trust in its product. This means that the criteria used to define clean label in a general sense include:

      • “free-from” claims,
      • minimal processing and
      • no artificial preservatives or artificial ingredients.

Clean Label Food Trend and Your Food Operation

Clean label food movement has been trending over the past few years and is expected to play a prominent role in the food landscape going forward.

As a result of demand for clean products, food manufacturers and food service operations are experiencing increasing costs associated with research and development, sourcing ingredients and reformulating recipes to keep up with the clean label trend.
